There comes a time when every responsible project manager takes a hard look at what he or she has accomplished and what lies ahead.

WeAreLexington.com posted its first page a month ago with the belief that people would visit a website that focused its energy and resources to featuring the people who make Lexington the special place it is. I am pleased to say we were right.

Our profile on the Kentucky Theater's Fred Mills drew more than 4,700 page views, more than any other of our profiles. That wasn't a surprise to me since practically everyone in town knows Fred, and we heavily promoted his story. Close behind was a profile on a guy named Rob de Nerd, an aspiring musician. I cannot explain why he drew a lot of attention, but he did. Maybe he has a lot of friends and had all of them visit us.

Our interview with a homeless man drew both praise and condemnation. Some thought I was courageous to tell his story. Others thought I was taking advantage of him. They were wrong. I featured him because he, just as much as Mayor Jim Gray or you, or I, he is a part of Lexington. Yes, he is homeless, and while not proud of that fact, he is trying to change his status. I know the city has taken steps to find him and to see what aid is available to him. I also know he has friends who might be able to help him. I hope someone has/does.

Publishing this website five nights a week has required a lot of time. The work of finding and interviewing people and then writing about them has been enjoyable and have made the effort worthwhile, but it has taken me totally away from writing mystery novels, something I enjoy. I have missed spending time with my characters - Ryan Crosby, Danny Sebastian, and Robert Hathaway. They have patiently waited for me to return.

I do not have the time and energy to do both. Looking ahead, my regular job will be demanding more time in September, including weekends. With a book, I can write a little each day and not worry if, on certain days, I cannot. I considered publishing this site once or twice a week but decided against it. Who would remember to check in on us?

So, I will be taking a break. For how long, I don't know.

I want to thank those who trusted me to write their stories or appeared in our photos. We took that responsibility seriously and I trust that we met your expectations.

WeAreLexington.com is a noble venture. I hope I can find a way to revisit it. And now, like the woman and horse in the picture above, it is time for me head home and my other responsibilities.

Sincerely, Malcolm Stallons
